I got my hair done yesterday-- cut, color, straightening. It looks really good! I hurried back to work from the salon hoping to extract some compliments from my office mates, but they had all gone home for the day. So I stayed at the office to do some more work, but called my husband to tell him about my hair and how happy I was with the result. A couple of hours later, I went home. I could hear the TV on in the living room, so before I went in to show my husband my hair, I ducked into the bathroom to brush it first. I had just gotten off a bicycle after all. So finally I go into the living room and greet him with a big smile and a reminder about the hair, because there is always a chance that he wasn't paying attention when I told him earlier that I had gotten my hair done. Also, experience has taught me that I can't expect him to notice subtle changes in the length, color and texture of my hair all by himself without prompting,

He looks up smiling, then the smile turns to a frown and he says...Yes, I am totally a clueless ManCollapse )

Not in Vegas :(

Hello people,

As you have probably surmised by the title of this post, my trip to Las Vegas didn't happen. We were within fifteen minutes of leaving for the airport when we got a message that the flight had been cancelled. They rescheduled us for a 6:00 a.m. flight on Christmas day. We would have had to get up at 2:30 a.m. to make that flight. Then we would have arrived in Las Vegas at 10:30 in the morning and wouldn't have been able to check into our hotel until 4 pm. I mean I know they would have looked after our luggage, but I didn't want to do my whole first day in Vegas on two hours of sleep with no opportunity to rest. We all three (father, husband and me) instantly and unanimously agreed to cancel the trip. It wasn't worth going all that way to arrive in a state of exhaustion on the 25th only to rush back on the 27th.

I'm not as upset about this as I otherwise might have been. I'm not really a traveler, anyway, as I've always said. I'm half disappointed and half-relieved. My main motivation had been to be out of town for Christmas. But hey, Christmas is over now and I won't have to deal with it again for another year!

So, some of you might be wondering where the next chapter of Dragon Lady is. The fact is that I was working right up until 9 pm the night before we were supposed to catch our flight, and then I needed to pack, etc. I did actually finish the chapter but I didn't have time to go through and tweak it. I haven't really had time alone with a computer and without the constant company of family members until now. After I make this post, I'll tweak Dragon Lady Chapter 5 and post it sometime this afternoon.

In other news, I bought myself a very nice Christmas present-- a Kindle paperwhite. I love the way it glows in the dark! It means I can sit in bed of a cold night benefiting from the warmth of my slumbering husband, and read until I get sleepy. Then, when my head starts nodding, I'm in the right place to just fall asleep, as opposed to in another room where lights have to be turned out and casserole pans reproach me and I recall that my mascara still needs to be removed. By the time I've dealt with all those things, my sleepiness has faded and wakefulness has returned.

To bronze_ribbons, thanks so much for the Smooch Lions! They are everything you described. Am I getting some fruit value when I eat them? The package arrived mid-morning on the day we were supposed to have left. Naturally I ripped it open and ate half of my Lions immediately. "What's that?" my husband asked. "Dried fruit," I replied. Bwa ha ha-- he lost interest. Mine, all mine. Hey, I shared my Almondillos with him.

I hope you guys all had a nice Christmas and got good loot and maybe some good bargains if you went out shopping today! If you get a chance, drop by and let me know how you're doing.

Hello Readers,
I've been working through the weekend, but that's nothing new. I sure will be glad when this week is over. There are too many deadlines hanging over me at the moment. At least I got my workout in today. But then I went directly from the gym to Starbucks where I negated all my workout efforts by having a grande peppermint mocha with extra whip and chocolate drizzle on the whip! I asked for non-fat milk, but I'm pretty sure they made it with 2 percent.  I hope you are all enjoying the season. I love Christmas lights and anything that glitters. I just hate being so busy.

Dragon Lady
Chapter 4
By Brit Columbia
Fandom: FAKE
Timeline: Set after Justice in July of the FAKE First Year Together series. Also set after Volume 7 of FAKE
Summary: JJ is upset that Drake has recently started seeing a woman JJ considers violent. He feels that Drake needs to be rescued.
Rating:  This whole story is worksafe.
Disclaimer: FAKE, featuring Dee, Ryo, Bikky, Carol, Ted, Drake, and JJ, was created by Sanami Matoh. I make no claim on FAKE or Ms. Matoh or any of her characters. I write fanfiction with no expectation of monetary reward.
Author's Notes:  Detectives James Chang and Eliza Austen are my characters. So are Lily and her brother, and Bridget, James’s girlfriend.

Bridget first appeared in FAKE First Year Together: A New Day, in Chapter 6. She was interested in Ryo, but later when she showed up at the station looking for Ryo, Dee managed to deflect her onto James instead.

Lily has appeared twice before in my FAKE stories. She was first introduced in Chapter 15 of A New Day when Ryo had lunch with Drake at a Chinese restaurant. Later she appeared about halfway through Slave to a Gladiator.

Dragon Lady, Chapter Four

Distracted by his annoyance at the way Bikky had taken up rhythmically kicking the table leg, JJ did not notice at first when Lily returned to their table. He was alerted by a shrill command in the vicinity of his right ear to “move stupid blue head before I spill tea!” JJ jerked to the left almost cracking heads with Carol as a tray containing two more pots of jasmine tea and four more small china cups descended abruptly onto the table over his right shoulder. Cups clattered and rolled and tea sloshed, but fortunately none got on JJ.

FAKE First Year Together: Justice (June) Chapter 33
Dee: What the f*ck are you looking at?

Hello Readers,

Apologies to those who were waiting for this chapter. I had hoped to post it this afternoon after my clients left and while I was still technically 'at work', but it was not to be, as my husband called me at work and informed me that he had invited some friends over for tea and was going to press them to stay to dinner and therefore really needed to know-- did we have any food to offer them? And could I possibly come home and cook it?

So I rushed home and found that he had set up the table with fruit and cookies and had the kettle on for tea (all in all, a very good start) and the rest would be up to me. I was torn between real pleasure at the impending visit of the friends, whom I have been missing since my socal life started taking a back seat to the pleasures of work, versus dismay about exactly WHEN I was going to be able to post my chapter. Eleven pm? Midnight?

Anyway, the situation resolved itself. Our friends, who are boyfriend and girlfriend and facing an absence from each other of several weeks while one travels for business and family reasons, really just wanted to spend their last night together, so they drank tea and ate fruit, and took their leave while remaining strong in the face of vigorous protests from my husband. I did not support my husband and instead let the guests go because, to me, socially as in all other things, "No Means No" and I will always respect someone's 'no.' All of our friends know this. I personally hate to be exhorted to do something else once I have said 'no thank-you' to something. I know my limits and I know my own mind, and I extend this same courtesy to other people. I'm well aware that it is different in other cultures, which is why I explain my outlook to people who come to my house for the first time so that we all know where we stand. My husband has the exact opposite POV, believing that he must push past people's natural reserve and politeness to ensure that they get what they want (but feel they cannot say 'yes' to), so between the two of us, our guests' needs are covered!

So here I am posting my chapter at 8 pm, which is still Sunday night over most of this huge North American continent. I hope you guys enjoy the chapter. I sincerely hope I don't have to add paragraph breaks to every single line this time like I did with the last three posts. Oh, LJ....

FAKE First Year Together: Justice (June), chapter 33
By Brit Columbia

Fandom: FAKE
Pairing: Dee and Ryo
Timeline: Set after my big story FAKE First Year Together: A New Day (May). Both Justice and A New Day are set after Volume 7 of FAKE
Summary: Dee and Ryo are hunting the dangerous and corrupt Lieutenant Abernathy, and they are starting to close in on him. Unfortunately, he has a gang of crooks and crooked cops who are helping him go after Dee, Ryo and Bikky.

Rating:   This chapter is worksafe.
Disclaimer: FAKE, featuring Dee, Ryo, Bikky, Carol, The Chief, Ted, Drake, JJ, and FBI Agent Diana Spacey, was created by Sanami Matoh. I make no claim on FAKE or Ms. Matoh or any of her characters. I write fanfiction with no expectation of monetary reward.
Author's Notes:  Pastor Luke and Bo Benson are my characters. So are Detectives Lonnie Fielding and Hugh Clayton for the Seventh Precinct. Karen, owner of the K-Ray Horse ranch in Pennsylvania is my character too, as are her two teenaged neighbors, Chloe and Gemma, and her employee, Pedrick.

Thank you to ladyfeather and tripple_p for beta-reading this chapter for me.

Previously in Justice:

Bikky has an acquaintance from his street-rat days called Bo Benson (Bikky and his friends call him ‘Crazy’ Bo). A couple of weeks ago, Bo was induced by an attractive woman calling herself ‘Maria’ to ask Bikky to deliver a bag of Doritos to Wes Samberg, a small-time but nonetheless dangerous drug dealer. The Doritos bag turned out to be full of heroin hits, and while Wes escaped, Bikky and his two friends Jill and Penny were roughed up by the police. Detectives Lonnie Fielding and Hugh Clayton were the two cops (sent by Lieutenant Abernathy) who tried to take them into custody. They didn’t succeed because Dee got there first, followed by Ryo and the Commissioner.

Bikky was consequently sent to a horse ranch owned by a friend of Ryo’s aunt Elena, for his safety. Bikky is currently plotting to temporarily escape from the ranch so he can return to New York City in time to accompany Thomas to a meeting with the wheelchair guy, Tahawney. Tahawney is in possession of the laptop that Bikky lost in a subway scuffle with Abernathy’s men not long ago.

The CI team at the Twenty-Seventh Precinct tried to catch Abernathy in a sting involving an allegedly stolen car with drugs in its trunk a couple of weeks ago. Dee and Ryo had pressured an ex-con named John Hambler, an old acquaintance of Abernathy’s, into helping them set up the sting. The sting failed because Abernathy called a couple of uniformed officers to go and arrest John Hambler. Ted, who was undercover, was riding shotgun on the sting.  The two uniformed officers were Gordon Cooper and Cameron Bell of the Seventh Precinct. Hambler ended up shot dead, while Ted was lucky to only be knocked unconscious.

Internal Affairs was called in to ‘investigate’ Bell and Cooper and just when they were getting ready to pin most of the blame on Officer Cooper, Cooper decided to talk. He called a meeting with Dee and Ted, but was too drunk to give them much information. Later that night, Cooper was found dead of alcohol poisoning. Dee and Ted were the last two people to see him alive, and they felt that Cooper’s death was not an accident. Cameron Bell is a good friend of detective Lonnie Fielding.

Since then, Ted discovered that under the guise of their investigation into John Hambler’s death, the IA agents have been compiling video footage of key players in the investigation against Lieutenant Abernathy of Internal Affairs. They have created doctored versions of these videos in which people allegedly say things to incriminate themselves. The Commissioner is very upset about this because a bug was discovered in his office and his old enemy, Liam Hennessy, who is the Commander of Internal Affairs now has a significant amount of incriminating audio recordings which feature the Commissioner’s voice, if not his face.

Meanwhile, Agent Diana Spacey of the FBI is hot on the trail of Abernathy’s mysterious spy at the Twenty Seventh Precinct.

Dragon Lady, Chapter Three

Hello FAKE readers! I had a very long, busy work day, and although I was originally hoping to have Saturday afternoon off, I realized as of about 6:00 today (hey, it still feels like Friday to me) that that wasn't going to happen. Now, I still plan on publishing Justice this weekend, but it probably won't be until Sunday.

Anyway, here I am with Dragon Lady, chapter 3, which I hope you enjoy.

Update on Justice

I'm not sure how many people are still reading Justice, but since I had said that the new chapter would be published long before now and it obviously hasn't been, I thought I ought to give you some idea of when to expect it. It came back from the betas, but needed some fixing and while I was doing that I got caught in the jaws of a hellish week, followed by an equally hellish weekend, and had to put the whole thing by. I grabbed the opportunity to publish Dragon Lady on Friday because it was already written (as are chapters 3 and 4) and didn't need to be beta-read or edited much, and I knew I wouldn't have time on the weekend.
I plan to publish Justice chapter 33 sometime this weekend, along with another chapter of Dragon Lady.

I really have nothing else to report. Life is all about work nowadays. Oh wait, I just thought of something. My husband and I ordered a pizza with a gluten-free crust on Sunday and I will never do that again because it disagreed with me in a big way! Yes, it was my husband's idea. He is anti-salt and anti-gluten. His days of being allowed to choose pizza toppings and crusts are hereby over.

Hello again! I think I got around the problem. I remembered something worth trying, which was to change browsers. It wasn't perfect, but it's workable. I've got weird spacing and font sizing happening now, but at least I can post.
This is the first chapter of a new story, and  it will probably run to 6 chapters total. Well, okay, maybe 7. I'll be posting once a week throughout the Christmas season
and beyond, so I hope you'll come back regularly to read the updates!  Here we go...

Trying to post a chapter, but LJ will not allow me to have paragraph breaks
Ryo's anger
brit_columbia
Hello FAKE readers, I'm trying to post the first chapter of a new FAKE story here, but LJ will not allow me to have paragraph breaks and I don't know what I have to do to get 'em. Unfortunately, I'm almost out of time for today, so if LJ doesn't stop glitching like this, I may not be able to publish today. I looked up how to do paragraph breaks in html, but if I go to html, then I have to re-format everything, and I just don't have a spare hour to do that line by line, plus when I tried it I got super-large spaces between my paragraphs and I don't know why that's happening either. Any suggestions?
